RCHS YEARBOOK/PHOTOJOURNALISM
YEARBOOK JOURNALISM Credits: 1 Grade Placement: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 10 with a B average and teacher recommendation. Course Description: This class provides the study of and practice in gathering and analyzing information, interviewing, and note taking for the purpose of writing, editing and publishing for print in the school's yearbook. The class includes instruction and practice in effective journalistic writing forms and techniques as well as layout, design and typography. Representative examples of amateur and professional journalism are studied. Ethics in journalism is discussed and central to participation in the class. Students plan, publish, market, and distribute the school's yearbook. Being responsible for the complete creation of the yearbook in coordination with the Yearbook Photography class, students learn business skills, teamwork and deadline importance. Focusing on learning how to be a journalist, this class is enriched with real world writers as guest speakers and field trips to various real world publishing sites such the Braidwood Journal and Bailey Printing. Seniors may take this class as their English 12 elective for graduation requirements. YEARBOOK PHOTOGRAPHY Credit: 1 Grade Placement: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of Photo Tech with a B average and teacher recommendation. Course Description: This class provides the study of and practice in designing page layouts for the school yearbook and students will become proficient at using the following applications: iPhoto, Adobe InDesign CS, and Adobe Photoshop CS. The course focuses on desktop design and digital photography. Students will learn and practice the basic skills to produce a yearbook such as journalism, technology, manipulation of digital photography and design. Students will get an introduction to the use of DSLR cameras. Course topics include photo basics, photographic composition, digital photography and manipulation. Being responsible for the complete creation of the yearbook in coordination with the Yearbook Journalism class, students learn photography skills, teamwork and deadline importance. Focusing on learning how to be a photographer, this class is enriched with real world photographers as guest speakers and field trips to various real world publishing sites such the Braidwood Journal, Bailey Printing, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
