February 2005

What comes to mind when you hear the word "Fairbanks"? Many may quickly think of Fairbanks, Alaska. Others may visualize a proper English butler to meet your every need. But to our third grade students, Fairbanks is the name of our teddy bear that will travel to Portland, Oregon, home of the children's author, Beverly Cleary.

While in Portland, Fairbanks will be the welcomed guest of Mrs. Strobel's third grade classrom at Stephenson Elementary. Both classes will share geographical and educational knowledge with the help of our lovable bear, Fairbanks. One place Fairbanks is sure to visit while in Porland is the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden.

TRAVEL UPDATE: FAIRBANKS ARRIVED IN PORTLAND, OREGON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2005.

Students in Mrs. Strobel's class are excited about showing Fairbanks the bridges of Portland. Updates need to be made to replace pages lost due to a server damage.

Until then ... read about Cocoa and Mocha's trips last year to Australia, or follow the link below to our long list of bear trips since 1997!!

Our Bears Are "Zoo - Hopping" This Year!

Third grade students love animals, so we have decided to let our traveling teddies help us learn more about the animals around the world, their habits and their habitats, while we are stuck inside during the snowy winter months. How does a trip to the rainforest in Australia sound when its below zero in Illinois? Sounds pretty good to us! Please join us!

Our bears started traveling even before school began!

First destination: The San Diego Zoo

PATRIOTIC PATTY @ THE SAN DIEGO ZOO

During the summer of 2003, Patriotic Patty received a "behind - the - scenes" tour of the San Diego Zoo in San Diego,California, thanks to Tommy's Aunt Cindy! Click on the link above to see some of the highlights of Patty's visit to San Diego.

Next travel destination: Australia!

MOCHA BEAR AND COCOA BEAR TAKE A TRIP DOWN UNDER

Along with the Christmas packages being mailed from Braidwood, Illinois, December 2004, two furry little creatures known as Mocha Bear and Cocoa Bear were stuffed into a fairly large envelope with the proper customs forms and postage. Cocoa was on her way to Melbourne Zoo in Melbourne Australia, while Mocha is heading to the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas, Australia. Education destination: to learn about Australia, its land and its people, and the variety of animals native to the habitats of Aussie Land!

Here are some of the general Australian websites we found helpful:
