Learn About Big Cats

Cheetahs belong to the cat family and are considered by some people to be very elegant. They are the fastest of all land animals.A cheetah can run 72 miles per hour ... that is 7 miles and hour faster than my dad should drive if he's driving the speed limit on the interstate! Cheetah's can go from standing still to 45 miles an hour in TWO SECONDS!

Have you ever noticed those dark lines that go from a cheetah's eyes to its mouth? Do you know why they have those lines? Those lines help protect the cheetah's eyes from the glare of the sun.

I would never like a cheetah to lick me because it is rougher than a house cat's tongue. It is so rough it is as rough as a tool used to file wood! This rough tongue is used to scrape every last bit of meat off the bones of animals it eats!

Did you know that cheetahs eat fruit? They do this when the weather is dry. Otherwise, they love to feast on dead animals since they are carnivores.

In the 1920s some people wanted to see if cheetahs really were the fastest animal so they tried to make them race against greyhounds. The problem was that the cheetahs kept cutting across the track. They must have thought they were in the wild and could go wherever they wanted to!

I have a couple of stuffed cheetahs to share with you.
