Bobby's Dolphin Page

Dolphins are members of the fish family. The bones in their fingers are just like the bones in our fingers. One book I read compared the dolphin's top fin to a keel, which is found on the bottom of the boat and helps steer it. This top fin, called a dorsal fin, helps the dolphin keep its balance. Dolphins have jelly like stuff in their eyes that help keep the eyes from being irritated in the water. Practically their whole entire body is covered with muscles.
Dolphins eat lots of fish, squid and jellyfish to help them keep warm and have enough energy to swim. The dolphins who are by rivers eat clams and crabs. Sometimes dolphins will jump out of the water to catch flying fish. When the dolphin catches its fish, it kills the fish with its sharp teeth and then eats it head first. The dolphin doesn't chew its fish. The teeth are just to catch and hold it so it doesn't get away.
Dolphins are often confused with porpoises. The dolphin has a longer nose than a porpoise. The teeth of porpoises are not as sharp as dolphin teeth. Sometimes they are the same colors and sometimes they aren't.
You can see dolphins in Florida and the Pacific Ocean. You can them in zoos and other places, like Sea World. I have never seen a dolphin, but someday I hope I will.
