Polar bears are one of the biggest bears in the world. Some male bears are as tall at 8.5 feet and can weigh up to 900 pounds! The adult female is only 6.5 feet and 500 pounds. They are found in the Artic Region, including in the icy waters and along the coastlines. Most polar bears can live from 25 to 30 years.
Polar bears are one of the largest carnivores in the world. That means they eat lot of meat, mostly seals.It is important for polar bears to have 4 lbs. of fat per day to survive. They get this fat by eating seals, walruses, whales, fish and sometimes vegetation.
Polar bears do not always live or stay by other polar bears. Sometimes they live alone.In the winter they rest in dens to avoid bad weather. They have a good sense of smell. These bears swim with their head above water and dog paddle just like dogs.
Polar bear cubs weigh about 500g when they are born. They are 30 cm (12 in) long. They look like they don't have any hair, but they really do. It is very fine fur. When the polar bear is full grown, it will have very thick fur. Under the fur there is dark black skin.
Before 1972 about 200 bears per year were killed by sport hunters. In 1972 hunting polar bears was banned.
