Dear Mrs. Johnson's Fourth Grade:

I have had a great time here in Wisconsin. I have talked with many of Mrs. Lepisto's fourth grade students here in Racine. They helped me with my journal entries, which are typed below. There are a lot of neat places in this state!! I have included some web sites where you can go to learn even more about these places, as you'll see when you read my journal below. Thanks for sending me to visit these friendly

Flat Sarah's Journal

Racine, WI

May 27 - June 2 1997

Laura B. shared some information with me about Racine Kringle:

One thing Racine is famous for is kringles. Kringle is a delicious cake-like oval dessert. It is a Danish dessert which originated in Denmark. There are many people in the Racine area who are of Danish descent. There are so many different kinds of kringle like: cherry, apple, almonds, and strawberry. There are bakeries where you can buy kringle like Lehmann's Bakery, O&H Danish Bakery, and Larsen's Bakery. After 63 years, the recipe for kringle remains the same at Bendtsen's Bakery. I think Pecan kringles are the best kringles. If you want, you can order them on-line!

Mike E. told me about the Case Company:

The Case Company is just some of the many things Racine is famous for. The Case company started about 150 years ago in Racine. The Case Company is the second largest producer of farm equipment in the world. It sells its products in 150 different countries. About 2,500 different people work at Case. You can visit The Case Company online!

Ian H. helped me find information on S. C. Johnson Wax:

S. C. Johnson Wax is one of the famous places in Racine. S. C. Johnson produces bug spray - Off!, furniture polish - Pledge, air freshener - Glade, shaving lotion - Edge, and several different kinds of floor polish. In the Golden Rondelle, you can see shows and plays. It was a building built for the worlds fair in 1964-65. They took the buildin apart and moved it to Racine, where they rebuilt it! Our school is named after Mr. Johnson, the founder of the company. S. C. Johnson Wax has a testing center where they test their bug sprays on real bugs! A scientist from the company visited our classroom and talked to us about the tests for the science fair. S. C. Johnson Wax is a BIG company, it takes up a whole block in the city and many acres in the county of Racine. Visit S.C. Johnson Wax online!

Frank Lloyd Wright

by Sara A.

Racine is famous for all the things architect Frank Lloyd Wright has done for the city. He made the Hardy House by Lake Michigan on Main Street that is guarded by two very tall walls. Karen Johnson Boyd and her husband own a house Frank Lloyd Wright designed and build. They display their art collection which emphasized the modern American crafts movement throughout their house. Wright also designed the S. C. Johnson Wax Administration Building. He designed the Herbert Johnson House in Racine in 1937. See if there is a Wright building near you!

Bagley, Wisconsin

Had I come to Racine a week earlier, Ryan V.would have taken me with him to Bagley, WI. He told me all about his family's trip:

Bagley is a famous place in Wisconsin because lots of people camp there. It is fun there because you can go fishing whenever you want on the Mississippi River. You can go on boat rides too. You can get stuck in some places. In the town of Bagley, they have a small gas station, a couple restaurants and lots of bars. There is a store called the Grandpa Store and it has lots of candy. The campground is really big. At night, when you are sleeping, you can hear the train and you can feel the ground vibrating. Across the railroad tracks, there are trailer homes that people live in. My Grandma and Grandpa live in one and my other Grandpa lives on one. If you want information about camping there, click on Bagley .

The Wisconsin Dells!

Whitney W. would have taken me to the Wisconsin Dells if I had been here earlier:

This weekend I went to the Wisconsin Dells with my Grandma and Grandpa, aunts, sister, and brothers. We went to a campground and stayed in a cabin and a trailer. Then we went into town and went in stores. After that we went to Culbers and I had some ice cream I also went to the Wax Museum and it had Star Wars figures. Then we went back to the campground and played capture the flag. I also went to Serpent Safari and saw the world's largest snake.Visit the Dells online!

Well, that's what I've learned in the short time I've been here! Thanks again for sending me!

See you soon!
