Excalabear on the Island of St. Lucia

June 2002

In June, 2002, Excalabear travelled to the island of St. Lucia with Mindy & Steve Hudak.

Mindy & Steve were honeymooning on the island and graciously offered to let our furry little friend visit the island with them. Travel arrangements for Excalabear were made by Mindy's mom, Carol Freeman, who is a speech teacher at Custer Park Elementary. Mindy had seen pictures of the trip Excalabear had made with Mindy's mom and dad to San Antonio, Texas last year and thought it would be fun to add to Excalabear's travel experiences!

A great big thanks to Mindy & Steve!!

A little bit about St. Lucia ...

St. Lucia, one of many Caribbean islands, is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a total area of 238 square miles. For approximately 150 years, the island was alternately British and French. However, the island was home to the Arawak Indians prior to the Europeans. The Indian tribes called the island "Ioüanalao" and "Hewanorra", which means "there where the iguana is found".

Since 1979, St. Lucia has been an independant democracy of the British Commonwealth. Although English is the official language, many locals speak a French based language. Coconuts, bananas, and tourism are very important on the island of St. Lucia. On this island, people drive on the left side of the road. The East Caribbean Dollar is the form of currency used here. Local island people call it the "ecee" and 2.68E$ = 1 American dollar.

Many people from all over the world like to vacation on St. Lucia!
