10 Things Teachers Should Know About School Libraries
  1. The library is owned by you and your students, not the librarian.
  2. The library is an "intellectual gymnasium." Studentsin the library should have a reason for being there. Whether for academic or personal reasons, students should be in the library because they need the library's resources not just to be somewhere.
  3. The best resource in the library is the librarian. Librarians can help you plan a project, solve some technology problems, find professional research, give insight into an ethical problem, or answer reference questions. The librarian can help you find answers and link you with other sources. Please ask for assistance.
  4. Planning is a good thing. Advanced planning with the librarians will lead to greater success for you and your students as you work on projects that require information resources.
  5. Librarians provide access to both print and electronic information. The librarian can help you determine which one best suits your and your students' projects.
  6. The librarian can help evaluate information found on the internet.
  7. The librarian can help create assessments for your students' projects.
  8. The librarian can be your technology support center. They can help search the web, create a powerpoint, use the digital cameras, etc.
  9. The library can help improve your students' performance on standardized reading tests. Research has proven that children become more adept at reading by practicing reading. The library has a wide range of print material. The librarian can help you or your students find reading materials. If you need a booktalk for your class, ask. (Allow some time for preparation).
  10. The librarian will be your partner when trying new things.
